Why Virginia Beach’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon is running out of town

VIRGINIA Beach front, Va. (WAVY) — It was initial claimed this month that Virginia Beach is losing one of the most important functioning occasions, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series Virginia Beach Half Marathon.

It has been a Labor Working day weekend custom at the Oceanfront.

We are now digging deeper into why the event has decided to operate out of city.

“It’s been a great operate,” says Virginia Beach Resort Affiliation President John Zirkle

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon has run its course,

“Unfortunately, I think issues arrive to an close at times… Attendance has been dwindling in excess of the several years. I think initially they were at 25,000 and now it dropped down to much less than 15,000 runners and a good deal of them are locals,” he explained.

Zirkle remembers 2001 which was the first year of the 50 percent marathon. A South African runner was the first male winner. A California runner became the first feminine winner.

“That 1st calendar year the energy was just electric powered. You had goosebumps when they had been sending racers off, the bands were playing and everything,” he claimed.

Having said that, lower attendance signifies a lower number of rented hotel rooms.

“We negotiate with groups like that because they are likely to promise to fill so many rooms, so you give them a reduce price, and they ensure people folks are coming rain or shine,” Zirkle discussed.

Now, those rooms aren’t filled, so hotels don’t get the area cash flow.

“Labor Day weekend, next to Memorial Day and Fourth of July, it’s the busiest weekend that we have, and we would hold rooms for the half marathon attendees and this sort of,” Zirkle reported.

The organizers did not return an email request for comment, but Zirkle suggests he knows what’s going on.

“At the finish of the working day, the Rock ‘n’ Roll organizers need to make income and they will need the registration to make it work,” he stated.

Here’s another concern: the numbers are down in Virginia Seashore because, according to the race web page, there are 21 races together with 15 in The us and six in overseas international locations.

Zirkle weighs in on that.

“There are so several, it doesn’t have that bang it had initially… We still have the bands, still had the course, and the tunes, and everything, but you don’t have as quite a few people… I’m confident the town will operate out anything to switch the race with some thing … we just do not know what,” he reported.
